What we do

Campaign

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and the Province of NS routinely appropriate natural park land so as to construct buildings, parking lots, facilities and such in the core of the city. FHC campain against this destruction of urban green space and the natural life it contains.

protect

Not only is the Common precious to humans but urban green space helps to fight climate change. Trees and brooks clean the air, protect against flooding and regulate local temperatures in our warming world.

Enhance

We support all efforts to maintain and grow the Common as green space. We educate decision-makers and members of the public on the many acres of common land lost. We lobby the media, HRM Council, committees of Council and even the provincial government to prevent any more give aways of Common land.

Friends of Halfax Common (FHC) acknowledges our location in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) People first signed with the British Crown in 1725.
We are all Treaty People. We honour the enduring presence and contributions of the Mi'kmaq people, and we are dedicated to fostering meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
